The 20 Book Campaign: Closing the 1,000,000 Word Gap

We are thrilled to announce the launch of the 20 Book Campaign, an initiative aimed at closing the 1,000,000 word gap and promoting literacy among young children. Research shows that young children whose parents read to them five books a day enter kindergarten having heard about 1.4 million more words than kids who were never read to. This substantial difference can have a profound impact on a child’s educational development and future success.

The 20 Book Campaign highlights the incredible benefits of having a home library. When children have as few as 20 books of their own at home—just one bookshelf full—they achieve three more years of schooling than children who don’t have any books at home. Our goal is to ensure every child has access to their own collection of books, fostering a love for reading and learning from an early age.

Reading 20 books a year equates to encountering 1,000,000 words. Children who achieve this milestone are in the top 2% of reading achievement, demonstrating the significant impact regular reading can have on literacy and academic success. Our campaign seeks to empower families to read together, create home libraries, and support children in becoming lifelong readers.

Join us in our mission to close the 1,000,000 word gap and provide children with the tools they need for a brighter future. For more information about the 20 Book Campaign and how you can get involved, please visit our website or contact us directly.
